What Are Wakeboard Boats?

Wakeboard boats are generally V-drive speedboats that are large and strong enough to tow watersports users behind them. The inboard engines contained in these boats are placed backwards in the stern to generate the high wakes necessary for waterboarding. The placement of the engine in the rear of the boat also adds weight to contribute to the stability of the boat as well as wake height. One very important feature of wakeboard boats is cruise control, which allows the operator to find and set a constant speed that they can then automatically maintain for watersports users to prevent them from falling and allow them to land their jumps.

In order to generate the high wakes necessary for watersports, wakeboard boats possess a few key features that assist this process. These features include hydrofoils, hull technology, wakeboard towers and ballast.

Hydrofoils are extendable wedges and plates that let the boat operator change the size and shape of the wake. They work by displacing water differently to push it higher or wider, as necessary or desired by the boat operator.

Hull technology refers to the way that wake boat manufacturers shape their boats' hulls to increase wake sizes. Manufacturers also pay special attention to how the rudder propeller and fins under the boat are shaped as these also impact the wake creation process. Since these features stick out so far underneath the boat, they make wakeboard boats unsuitable for shallow water conditions, so it's important for boat operators to avoid getting too close to the shore when they're operating their boats.

Wakeboard towers provide a higher place to anchor the tow rope and are very common on wakeboard boats. This raised anchor point helps wakeboarders and other watersports users launch up off the wakes and remain in the air longer.

Ballast is another term for weight, which is distributed throughout the wakeboard boat to adjust the wake size. Generally, more weight is put in the stern to lower the boat's draft and therefore push more water into the wake. However, ballast may be placed anywhere the boat operator desires to create the wake they want. Ballast comes in the form of sandbags or hard tanks filled with water.
