Using a wakeboard boat to tow water skiers, wakeboarders, wakesurfers, and inner tubers means that you’ve got all the engine power and wake-generating technology you need to have a great time. But maybe your wakes haven’t been as big or as clean as you’d like them to be, despite your best efforts. We’ve got a few tips on how to make those wakes better below.

Operating Your Boat

When driving your wakeboard boat, you need to master a few certain skills in order to give your riders the absolute best results. The speed of your boat should be kept between 20 and 25 miles per hour. If your boat has cruise control, this is the time to use it! A constant and even speed will prevent the wakes from collapsing and help your riders to stay upright.

Avoid making rapid turns or maneuvers. All of your turns should be wide enough to avoid collapsing the wakes. Tight turns will immediately cause your wakes to fall apart.

Adding Ballast

Ballast, or weight, helps to push your boat’s stern down further into the water, which in turn increases the size of your wakes. More ballast can help to clean up wakes and enlarge them. Use fat sacks, sandbags, or even your passengers to strategically weigh down the stern until you get a good wake.
