When it comes time to put your boat away, it’s key that you practice the right storage strategies. Otherwise, you may pull your boat out of storage only to find it in much worse condition than when you last saw it, and that’s why the experts at Active Water Sports have created this guide to boat storage.

Select the Right Storage Location

The first step is to find a suitable storage location. Depending upon your living situation and the size of your boat, you may be able to store your vessel at home. If this isn’t feasible, you will need to rent out some storage space. Indoor facilities offer the best protection, though you can also store your boat outdoors if you have the right covering.

Prepare Your Boat for Storage

There are a few steps you’ll need to take in order to get your boat ready for storage. Start by draining the water and flushing the engine in order to avoid corrosion. We recommend you give the boat a thorough washing with a marine-grade cleaning solution as well. Don’t forget to remove any belongings from the watercraft before putting it into storage. Finally, add fuel stabilizer to the tank and cover the boat as needed.

Check the Electrical System

If you plan to store your boat for an extended period of time, you’ll need to take special steps to protect the electrical system. Make sure that everything is turned off and remove the battery. Keep the battery well charged and in a dry location until it is time to reinstall it.

Check the Trailer

Some owners choose to keep their boats on the trailer while in storage. If you go this route, make sure that the tires are well-inflated and out of the sun. You should also make sure that your boat is strapped securely to the trailer so that it does not slip around during transport.

Schedule Periodic Visits

Some boat owners choose to forget about their vessel while it is in storage. However, we recommend that you periodically check up on your boat to monitor its condition. While you’re there, you can lubricate the bearings and check the boat cover for damage. These occasional visits will go a long way toward catching potential issues before they become truly serious problems.
