Proper boat care is an important part of keeping your boat running better for longer. However, no DIY project can get off the ground without the right tools. That is why Active Water Sports has created this helpful list of useful boat maintenance tools.

A Moisture Meter

Despite all of the measures taken to keep water out, boats are vulnerable to mold and mildew growth if excess moisture makes its way onboard. A moisture meter can give you a quick digital reading of moisture levels. Identifying and fixing problem areas has never been easier!

A Battery Terminal Puller

Many basic battery tasks are simple enough to be performed by the average boat owner without help from a mechanic. However, without the right tools, an easy fix can cause more harm than good. A battery terminal puller is necessary if you wish to remove or install terminals without fear of damage. Luckily, they are relatively inexpensive and easy to acquire.

A Sharp Blade

A good blade has endless applications: you can undo knots, slice lines, cut gaskets, trim rope, cut nets, and so much more! Be warned that your blade may corrode due to frequent exposure to moisture. To avoid this, find a titanium or stainless steel blade. Some models are built to float for easy retrieval.

Adjustable Face Spanner Wrench

An adjustable face spanner wrench is almost like a deck key, allowing access to the sea-strainer, fuel-fill caps, water-fill caps, and outboard motor. This will greatly expand your ability to inspect and repair all parts of your craft.

Jumper Cables

Jumper cables work the same on a boat as they do on a land vehicle. If you are not sure if there will be another boat available to give you a jump, consider investing in a space battery as well. When buying the cables, remember that cheaper options might not be able to handle the power needed to restart your boat’s battery.

A Sailor's Multitool

Space is often at a premium in a boat, so a multitool is perfect for boat repairs. There are many multi-tool models available, so the included features can vary a lot from tool to tool. These can include a marlin spike, small blade, rope cutter, zipper pull, can opener, bottle opener, hex-nut wrench, and/or a paint scraper. Shop around for a model that has what you need, and remember that some models are made specifically for boaters.
